BDM in the spotlight: Mark Lai
Homeloans BDM for Sydney, Mark Lai, has been in the industry five years since completing his Bachelor of Commerce degree.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDMs in the country.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
Once/twice a week (because I am desk-bound and it allows me more time to get things done in the office!).

What do brokers want most from you?
Brokers want realistic answers and they want a BDM who will answer their calls or get back to them in a timely manner.

What is your favourite part of the job?
Building new relationships with brokers and educating them to ensure everyone (including the borrower, the broker and the lender) has a smooth transaction and a positive outcome.

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
Some of the best brokers I have dealt with are self-efficient in writing and submitting quality loans, respectful to both their clients and to our assessors, patient (not pushy and expect unrealistic outcomes), humble and, lastly, trust in what I can do for them.

Describe your ideal weekend
Not in a suit and rewarding myself with a dirty feed.

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?

Working in the non-conforming space, we get a lot of strange scenarios. One that springs to mind was for the director of an online dating site, who was looking to refinance her unencumbered investment property. It was interesting and strange to see how much she earned in cash and other gift-related commodities!

How do you like your steak done?
Love steak. Must be medium-rare. Cook it for 3 minutes on each side and there you have a juicy steak!

Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
