BDM in the spotlight: Mathew Aiono

"I was a young something year old looking for a new adventure in a new country and was really enjoying working in a bank so I never left," says this week's ANZ Bank BDM for NSW.

ANZ Bank BDM for NSW, Mathew Aiono has been in the banking industry since 2002.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDM’s in the country.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
Majority of my time is spent on the road and would have to be my favourite part of the job. Catching up with brokers is sometimes like catching up with good friends, I love a good belly laugh and brokers usually hear me before they see me!

What do brokers want most from you?
Knowledge, credibility, honesty, approachability and don’t forget a whole lot of personality!

What is your favourite part of the job?
I love getting out on the road seeing new and existing brokers, I can be in a different office, home or suburb every day of the week. I’m also working with different brokers at different stages of their careers every day, so my conversations and interactions are again changing all the time. Variety is what makes this such an enjoyable role.

What distinguished the best brokers you deal with?
From what I see, the best brokers place their customers with lenders that suit their needs and wants. Customers can all too often only be focused on rate and the best brokers (from my perspective) can successfully advise a customer that there is far more to a loan than just the sharpest rate in town.

Describe your ideal weekend.
Spending time with my family is gold to me. I don’t see them much Monday to Friday so getting two whole days with the kids while they are still young and still want to hang out with big daddy is priceless. Ohh, and taking my 1965 Convertible American muscle car out for a run - nothing beats the sound of an old school V8.

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
I actually don’t have one particular scenario that stands out for me, but I did have an application that was sent into the bank where all the information was written in a foreign language. After speaking with the broker about this, he still couldn’t comprehend why we wouldn’t assess the deal, so I sent him back a written response in Samoan - he soon got the message.

How do you like your steak done?
It has to be an inch thick, Rib eye, cooked Medium/Rare with a big spoonful of seeded mustard on top! Might as well throw a rack of BBQ ribs in there too.

Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
