Going "old school" helps young broker build business

Processing loans in-house and hand-writing lists work best for this franchise owner

Going "old school" helps young broker build business

Nectar Mortgages franchise owner and 2017 Young Guns finalist Michelle Kerr wants fast responses and constant updates. And she wants basically everyone involved in the loan process to experience the same—informed at all times of the loan’s progress, or of any delays that might occur.

Kerr drives this kind of promptness and efficiency by following a structure and list. Many might find that difficult to carry out without the aid of digital technology, but not Kerr. “We use a whiteboard as a large visual for tracking what needs to be completed daily, ticking off each task as we go,” Kerr told MPA. “Sometimes ‘old school’ can be very effective.”

A franchisee who has the luxury to access a range of branding and marketing support, Kerr was able to build her business in three years with no experience and database – just primarily on word-of-mouth referrals.

Kerr also wants to keep things simple when it comes to delivering client experience. Although she hears many industry colleagues are outsourcing the arduous task of loan processing, she prefers to do it in-house. And that means she knows exactly what’s going on with every file at all times.

“When clients ask me to assist them with loan applications, they are asking me to handle it. And that’s what I do,” Kerr said.

But that doesn’t mean she gets no help at all. She simply walks across her office to get an update. Kerr has a remarkable settlement agent, and her husband, a finance broker with 23 years of experience, to depend on.

Giving back
Kerr’s team is not stuck to a niche, that way they can help as many people as they can — including brokers.

She hopes to build her business to a level where she can step back a little to assist new brokers achieve their goals and aspirations. “I’m actively involved with Rotary Club. I would love to mentor new brokers, and help build the Nectar brand to become a household name.”
