Phil Waugh quits Westpac

Wallaby flanker to take up outside opportunity

Phil Waugh quits Westpac

Just six months into his role as a head of  Private Wealth for NSW and Queensland, Phil Waugh is heading for pastures greener “effective immediately”.  In an internal memo seen by The Australian, Westpac’s head of private banking Ashley Stewart has announced that Alan Pool, who has been with the bank since 2007, after joining from Macquarie, will replace him for the time being.

Waugh had been in his current role since September, having joined Westpac in 2017  as a national manager of auto finance. Prior to Westpac, Waugh worked for CBA. The role was the result of Westpac’s rationalization of state based private banking heads. Westpac’s private wealth unit has around 10,000 customers.

In the internal  memo, Stewart praised Poole, stated Waugh’s experience with the bank and wished him well.  “Al has done an outstanding job leading the private wealth south team over recent months - working closely with our people to help clear the way and driving best practice across our business. Phil has held various leadership positions across Westpac over the past four years including national manager St George auto and head of COVID-19 for the business division, prior to joining the private wealth leadership team late last year.’

“I have enjoyed working with Phil over the past five months and wish him well in the opportunity ahead.”

Waugh played 136 matches for the Waratahs, and in 79 test matches for the Wallabies.
