Seizing opportunity and change: Genworth's Steven Degetto
Genworth Australia’s new chief commercial officer, Steven Degetto, brings his vast experience in the broker channel to exciting new opportunities ahead

1993 GRADUATES FROM BUSINESS SCHOOL
After completing his business degree in Tasmania while Australia was experiencing a recession, Degetto started as a teller at Trust Bank. He ended up in commercial lending, with a focus on farms and fishing in agri-finance.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved numbers and people.”

1998 MOVES TO SUNSHINE STATE AND BACK
Relocating to Queensland, Degetto entered the broker channel in a state sales manager role. Trust was acquired by Colonial State Bank, which in turn was acquired by CBA, and Degetto moved south again. “My first role was to integrate the Colonial business and manage the intermediary relationships in Victoria and Tasmania. I was proud to play a key role in launching CBA’s third party channel.”

2003 SWITCHES TO AGGREGATION
Joining aggregator Lawfund was a personal decision for Degetto. “I decided to focus my energies on a role that involved less travel so I could be with my young family.” He was quick to grow mortgage broker recruitment, and project-managed a new business division. Degetto was also chosen by his peers to represent the aggregator at a national level.

2006 RETURNS TO BANKING
A state sales manager position at Macquarie led Degetto back to banking. He reported to the head of Macquarie Mortgages, and the role offered him the opportunity to delve into leasing and consumer finance.
"It was an interesting time because, shortly after I began, the GFC struck and I had to wind down the mortgage business. Later the following year, I took a lead role in relaunching this business and enjoyed my time really getting to understand the industry.”

2012 RISES THROUGH SUNCORP RANKS
In more than five years at Suncorp, Degetto went from regional manager intermediaries for the south and southwest region to head of bank intermediaries leading a large team. His final role was as head of wealth and life intermediaries, bolstering his experience across insurance and wealth management.

“My proudest achievement at Suncorp was building the business to become a recognised alternative to the major banks, and we won a slew of leading non-major bank awards during this time.”

2017 JOINS GENWORTH
Now at Genworth, Degetto says the draw of the role was the chance to keep learning and growing personally while at the same time joining the executive leadership team. With major lenders changing their LMI providers, Genworth faces a major set of challenges, but Degetto says he’s always up for it.

“I seek out opportunities where change is required and where challenges exist, because I think that is where I can have the greatest impact and learn the most”
