My world changed in 2009 when a colleague and friend of many years was diagnosed with a rare cancer, Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, of which, less than 100 cases are diagnosed in Australia every year.
Desiree Fraser of her own initiative raised $70,000.00 for the Cancer Council, but needed an organisation that could support those diagnosed with rare cancers.
Immediately I felt compelled to support her and became a founding executive board member of Without a Ribbon, a charity created specifically for those diagnosed with rare carcinomas.
My parents were always incredible role models, from a young age I watched their involvement with many community groups and charities, so it has always been an important part of my life.
Believe it or not, there are literally hundreds of charities across Australia calling out for assistance, with many committees lacking professionals who can offer an organisational skill set and who are proactive and prepared to give of their time as the committees need them.
I have attended numerous medical conferences around Australia to promote awareness for Without a Ribbon and been involved in organising charity fundraising events for National Breast Cancer and Live Out Loud foundation.
I recognise it takes time out of my business but I have seen first hand the ripple effect my involvement has had within my business and the community.
Giving is integral to happiness and it unites workplaces, families, friends, and communities and for those looking to volunteer their time within a community group or charity a great place to start is researching an organisation that is close to your heart.
Knock on doors, pick up the phone, send emails and alert these organisations of your interest, you may not start out as a committee member but what you bring as a volunteer is invaluable to the running of any not for profit organisation.
