Work-life balance tips from brokers

How do you keep a healthy personal life (and your sanity) in tact while keeping the clients coming in?

It's a problem all brokers juggle with: How do you keep a healthy personal life (and your sanity) intact while keeping the clients coming in? MPA canvassed brokers for their thoughts.

For Mortgage Choice Brisbane's Matt Cunliffe, maintaining work-life balance is crucial to running a successful business. For him, family time is crucial – as is having a good staff support structure at work.

"Working very hard during business hours and then playing the role of a dedicated family man outside of work allows me to split the two apart and enjoy both aspects of life being business and personal," he says.

"Our team supports one another and, thanks to our support staff structure, we can make sure we always have enough brokers on staff and in the office to ensure the franchise operates at its peak at all times – regardless if someone is on annual leave.

"We encourage our brokers to block out set appointments in their weeks to ensure that they can maintain a healthy and active lifestyle away from the office while dedicating themselves to meeting our clients’ needs at the same time."

Alex Lambros from LJ Hooker Home Loans Eastern Suburbs adds that organisation is key – as is the ability to switch off from work and spend time on the important things.

"Stay organised by keeping a strict diary," he says. "Invest and spent time with your team. That will help you create an efficient business, and allow you to let go of functions better carried out by others. Fill the void you create with development and family time – not just more work!"

It is possible to create a great work-life balance within a mortgage brokerage, believes Mortgage Choice Perth's Richard Cromellin, and he believes he's built that culture into his business.

"Though our brokers work hard, they only book themselves out three nights a week, and don’t work weekends," he says. "Naturally, though, if a customer had to see them outside those hours they would. Most night appointments are finished by 7pm, which allows plenty of time for family. To compensate for the longer hours, we allow time off for those with kids to attend school functions, and others to attend to any personal issues."

Meanwhile, the Mortgage Gallery Dunsborough's Rod Holt accepts that, for him, it's all about making the most of the weekend.

"What's that thing called balance? Work consumes the bulk of our lives and any free time is dedicated to spending it with family and friends on weekends," he says. "Thankfully both of us in the business have an understanding wife that likes us out of their hair during weekdays."
