Nationwide Day of Action called for affordable housing
Housing advocates are planning to have a day of action next month to shed to point out what they say are dangers to affordable housing.

The Campaign for Housing and Community Development Funding is calling on the public to participate in “Our Homes, Our Voices,” a day of action that will be held in cities across the country on July 29.

“It is essential that we raise our voices in support of our homes and communities,” Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) said in a news release. “Increasing access to affordable homes — especially in areas connected to good schools, well-paying jobs, healthcare and transportation — helps families climb the economic ladder and leads to greater economic and community development.”

A $7.4 billion (15%) cut to affordable housing was included in the Trump administration’s proposal for the HUD’s 2018 budget. This includes the recommendation to remove the Community Development Block Grant, which helps low- and moderate-income communities with economic development projects.

“We will work alongside our national and local partners to not only stop the devastating cuts to housing investments proposed by the Trump administration, but to ensure that everyone — especially those with the lowest incomes — has an affordable place to call home,” Yentel said.
