Trump set to name nominee for permanent CFPB director

President Donald Trump is set to announce his pick for the permanent head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in order to meet a June 22 deadline, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Mick Mulvaney, who is acting director at the CFPB, told reporters that White House Counsel Don McGahn said the administration will work to meet appointment deadline. Mulvaney also said that Trump recently met one of the finalists for the role, but said he did not know who it was.

“I was not involved in the process," Mulvaney said. “Once they name a person, I look forward to working with him or her to get that person up to speed."

Mulvaney said the search for a permanent CFPB director was led by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House economic advisers Larry Kudlow and Kevin Hassett. Kudlow is currently recovering from a recent heart attack. Mulvaney said, however, that that would not change the timing.

Sources told Bloomberg that top candidates for the post include Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who is not running for re-election, and National Credit Union Administration Chairman J. Mark McWatters, a former adviser to Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas).

Although an appointment is set to be made soon, Mulvaney may stay on at the consumer watchdog for longer. The Senate could take months before it confirms his successor. Mulvaney expects to remain at the CFPB until late in 2018, according to the report.
