Three houses featured on the popular Grand Designs TV show are up for sale, some priced at more than double their building costs.
Three of the homes you may have seen on Grand Designs are on the market and if they get their asking prices, will make a neat profit for the ‘exhausted’ families who made their dream homes a reality.
The first is a Yorkshire Castle that cost £915 000 to finish and is on the market for £1.65 million, according to the Daily Mail.
Second, a Northamptonshire ‘doughnut’ shaped house which took £400 000 to build and is for sale for £1million.
The last one is a Newport house listed at £1,795,000 but the owners haven’t revealed how much the building costs totaled.
The Yorkshire Castle was featured on Grand Designs back in 2007 and the present Kevin McCloud revealed it is one of his favourites.
Taking a few years to complete, the seven-bedroom property appeared on the show a second time in 2009 when it was partly being used as a B&B to help with the running costs of the castle, as owner and architect Francis Shaw and his wife Karen were struggling to keep afloat financially.
On his return, McCloud said 'things haven't gone to plan' when explaining Shaw was 'bracing himself against the cold winds of the credit crisis and the property slump.”
However, he went on to tell viewers: “Two years of relentless work has left them exhausted and scarily remortgaged up to the hilt. This project has taken twice as long as intended. But for the first time in over 60 years, the castle is inhabited and no longer a ruin or an ancient monument.”
The second prop four-bedroom property in Milton Keynes was built in a couple's back garden for £400,000 and would give the owners a pre-tax profit of £600,000 if sold for its asking price of £1million.
The third house, a six-bedroom dwelling in Newport dates back to the 1720s and features an original tower with a library/cinema room on the ground floor
Owner Dean Berry said, “You could spend an unlimited amount of money here just because of the size of the property. I haven't totted it up yet. I don't take this for granted.”
